What is an LED light bulb?
A halogen bulb has a tungsten filament; running electricity through it produces a lot of heat, and also some light. By contrast, LED light bulbs utilize solid-state light emitting diode technology. Electricity also travels through LEDs and they also glow, but they are not simple wires; they are compounds pressed together in layered semiconductor chips.
Why are LED bulbs better? What are the advantages of LED lights?
Compared to halogen or incandescent bulbs, LED bulbs are:
Much cooler and therefore much less of a fire hazard.
Far more environmentally friendly and less expensive over the long term, because the same light output (lumens) can be produced with significantly less energy consumption (wattage). Specifically, 80%-90% of the energy consumed by LEDs is converted to light vs. 10%-20% for incandescent bulbs.
Much longer lasting; a quality LED bulb will have a lifespan of 40,000-60,000 hours, which equals about 15-20 years of use in your landscape lighting system. Halogen bulbs often last just 2000-5000 hours.
More durable, because they have no filaments and therefore can withstand heavy vibrations.
What wattage LED bulb should I use?
Again, LED bulbs require far less energy use (wattage) to produce the same light output (lumens) as old halogen bulbs. When shopping for VOLT® LED bulbs, notice that we call out the halogen equivalents. For example, our 7W LED MR16 bulb is the equivalent of a 50 watt halogen bulb.
Is it worth switching to LED bulbs?

What is Color Temperature (CCT)?
While all landscape lighting uses white light sources, some of these sources have a warm hue (more yellow), others have a cool hue (more blue). This variation in yellowish or bluish hue is what determines color temperature. Color temperature is expressed in degrees Kelvin (K). A warm white light might be 2700K – 3000K. A cool white source might be 4000K to 4500K. See the chart below to examples for varying color temperatures....
What is beam angle?
Beam angle is an indication of the width of a beam of light. For example, lamps can have very narrow, narrow, wide, or extra wide beams. These terms don’t actually describe the distance from one side of the beam to the other. Instead, they describe the angles measured from center of the beam to its edges. The way it’s measured is to first find the brightest part of the beam (usually at its center) and to record that value (in candelas). Then the light meter is moved towards one edge of the beam until the candela reading is one-half the center reading. The angle between the center line and the edge line is measured.
